Small Wine Cellar with Cigar Humidor in Russian Hill, San Francisco

Big and small wine cellars can fit as much bottles as you’d like given the right design.

The Inspiration for This Small Wine Cellar

In this stylish home, a special wine cellar showcased the distinct tastes of a couple with unique hobbies. The wife was into wines, while her husband had more fondness with cigars. They decided to create a storage room that could house both their interests, hence this ultra fancy glass wine storage unit!

Their goal was simple: they wanted a modern and elegant theme that reflect the style of the adjacent dining room with its fancy chandeliers and posh decor. This way, the wine and cigar haven would seamlessly blend in. Inside this wine cellar, the couple’s diverse interests coexists harmoniously.

Contemporary Small Wine Cellar with Cigar Humidor

The humidor in this small wine cellar is one of its more noticeable features. It is made of Cedar wood which maintains humidity and prevents the formation of molds. Additionally, it also deters cigar-loving insects. Cigar beetles love gnawing on cigars, and using cedar wood in building the cigar humidor will stop these bugs from pestering your cigar collection.

It’s best to store your cigars at a temperature around 70°F and humidity of 65% to 72% humidity. Cigars are delicate. Going over or under their optimum temperature and humidity may ruin their flavor and quality.

Knowing the optimum range for the safe storage of cigars is critical. In Russian Hill, the average temperature goes beyond that range starting from July (71.6°F)) and reaches its peak temperature of 73.4°F in September each year. These seemingly minor deviations may trigger the continuous deterioration of the cigars in your keep. The team has considered this fact and optimized the build of the cigar humidor that is well-suited to the client’s location.

A Self-Filling Humidifier for the Humidor  in the Wine Cellar

One of the unique things you’ll find in this wine cellar is the humidor built specially for this space. Unlike the typical humidification systems that can easily be bought in the market, the system used here is self-replenishing. This means that the owner doesn’t have to pour or refill the water once it runs out, because in this system, it never does! The water in this humidification system recirculates, ensuring that the cellar remains humid at a certain degree.

Similar to wines, the right humidity is paramount to cigars. Apart from preventing infestations, the right moisture content ensures the cigars burn evenly, maintaining the rich flavours. When exposed to too much dry air, the cigars will burn quickly and the taste will change.

Innovative Custom LED Lighting in this Small Wine Room

Chrome wine cellar pegs make every wine display look very modern and stylish.

You can see all of the details in this modern wine cellar through the transparent glass walls and glass door. The  wooden cigar cabinet is sandwiched between two illuminated white panels mounted with a metal wine peg racking system. This style of metal racking makes the bottles look like they’re floating in mid-air, giving a very modern and beautiful style to the cellar.

The white-lighted acrylic back panel is also not something that you usually see in a modern wine room. The custom feature is adjustable and dimmable, and is a wonderful way to create and enhance the mood in the room.

The team placed a standoff against the wall so that the acrylic boards were pulled against the wall. Then, the team placed ¾ inch acrylic over a piece of wood. The crew installed lighting between the wood and the acrylic panel.  It gives an illuminating effect to the back panel.

Triple-deep stainless steel wine pegs from Wine Cellar Designers Group were mounted on the white back panel. Below those wine pegs, a reveal row was installed. These display rows make reading wine labels easier and show off the beautiful bottles. Also, this reveal row is versatile when it comes to bottle sizes. You can place different bottle sizes from standard to magnum in it.

The acrylic white back panel with ambient lighting complements well with the metallic wine racking system. The combination gives the wine cellar a very contemporary and elegant feel.

Split System Cooling Units for Noise Reduction and Cooling Power

It is vital that you install the right cooling system for your small wine cellar. A heat load calculation must be done before installing a cooling system for your wine cellar.

For this Russian Hill wine cellar, the team installed a WhisperKOOL ceiling-mounted split-type cooling system.  Evaporator coils were hidden in the ceiling, with the condensing unit placed outside the house.  There’s minimum visibility of the refrigeration unit and minimal noise inside the wine room because of this setup.

Custom Touches like a Humidor Can Make a Huge Impact in Small Wine Cellars

The humidor inside this Russian Hill small wine cellar is one of the remarkable features of this project. For one, it was the first humidor project of the team. Then, its auto fill function is just amazing. It removes the need of constantly checking the water level of the humidifier.
