Minimalist Wooden Wine Racks for Clean Haight Ashbury Wine Cellars

This wooden wine rack looks simple but it was engineered and constructed with passion and dedication.

Many wine cellar collectors and enthusiasts trust Custom Wine Cellars San Francisco’s wooden wine racks. We offer stable and long-lasting wooden wine racks which can hold thousands of wine bottles, depending on the size of your collection. We can help you shop for over-the-counter wine racks, find modular and stackable ones, or customize an entire racking from top to bottom. In this article, we want to show you a very simple wooden wine rack and take you through our decision process regarding its design, materials, and size.

Dense Custom Wooden Wine Racks for 500 Wines

Customized wooden wine racks are more intricate to make than ready-made racks because we will have to fit them according to the dimensions of your space. It will take time compared to just buying straight from the counter, but the wait will be worth it in the end!

Wooden wine racks, whether residential or commercial, can be built using different hardwood varieties. The most common and popular varieties are Mahogany, Pine, Redwood, Alderwood, Walnut, and Oak. Using the correct type of wood is critical for the longevity of your wooden wine rack because it has to be a type that can survive the cool and humid conditions inside the residential wine cellar. Some types of wood warp when exposed to moisture, while others quickly recruit mold, which we don’t want inside our wine cellars.

For this basic wine room, we went for a light brown-colored wood species, so it brightens up the relatively tight room. The walls were also cream in color, so the slightly darker shade of the wine racks was a great contrast. The room’s height was standard, but we built the racks from floor to ceiling to maximize the space.

They installed one display row for this wooden wine rack.

Take a look at this wooden wine racking set we installed inside a glass wine cellar!

In the photos, you can see that the bottles are either displayed in a cork-forward position or an inclined, label-forward position. We decide only to have these two display styles to maximize the space. If you explore our other wooden wine rack designs, we mixed and matched more racking styles like x-bins, cubbies, and horizontal displays. Combining plenty of display configurations is a great way to enhance the look of your wine racks. However, since the priority here was to maximize capacity, we only included two.

A large percent of this wooden wine rack is filled with standard 750 slots. Here, you can display the bottles in a cork-forward position.

A Suitable Wine Cooling Unit for Tight Wine Cellars

The backbone of every well-built wine cellar is its insulation and cooling system. Without the proper insulation and air conditioning, a wine cellar will just be a common storage room. Wine cellars should be kept at a temperature between 45°F – 60°F, which should be the case 24/7, 365 days a year. Unlike standard rooms, the AC in wine cellars needs to be kept running all the time, so you need a wine cooling system that’s durable and commercial-grade.

To keep this wine cellar cool and humid, we went for the WhisperKOOL through-the-rack split wine system. It is a split-system cooling machine where the evaporator and condenser are separate. Also, a through-the-rack system is an AC that you can place within your wine racks without affecting its performance or structural integrity.

Through-the-rack systems are ductless, so you have more freedom to choose where to position your evaporator within your wine cellar. While some homeowners dislike seeing the cooling system inside the cellar, the owner here didn’t mind that the WhisperKOOL was visible since the unit had a classy enclosure.

Simple, Contemporary Wine Cellar Door for Minimalist Wine Cellars

To enter this wine room, people must open a wood-framed glass door. A glass door was an easy choice for this space because the room was relatively small. A glass door would open the space a little, allowing one to see inside the cellar without really going in. From the center of the door, the wooden wine racks are very obvious and look beautiful!

Wine cellar doors are also unlike your typical residential doors. Wine cellar doors need to be of exterior grade — the type of doors you usually see attached to the exterior walls of your home. This is because wine cellar doors will stand in between two different environments: the cold and humid inside environment of the cellar and the warmer, moisture-filled environment outside the cellar. Varying temperatures and humidity can affect the condition of a material. In the case of wood, it could cause warping. In the case of glass, it could promote condensation, which we don’t want to happen.

On the upper right-hand corner of this wooden wine rack, you can see the WhisperKOOL split cooling system.

If you’re scouting for doors, go for manufacturers specializing in wine cellar doors, so you don’t have to worry about it notwithstanding the conditions. For glass, we always use tempered panes that are at least ½”-thick. If it is a frameless glass door, we line the glass edges with rubber gaskets or U-channels. But since the glass door here was framed with wood, we didn’t have to add weather stripping around the glass.

You can have a glass door like this and have it etched. Glass etching is a way to further personalize your wine cellar doors and add more character. Some homeowners even go for getting metal or iron into the glass, especially when they have a traditional or classic wine cellar!
