A Simple Home in Sausalito, California, Gets a Revamp – The Construction of a Distinctive Wine Cellar

A residential wine cellar serves two purposes: it provides an easily accessible storage space for the homeowner’s vino collection and it adds an extra oomph to the aesthetics of the house. Two factors have to be considered when building cellars, and they are functionality and design. In order to ensure that a wine room is functional and well-designed, a prudent collector should hire a professional cellar builder.

Our team of expert builders, at Custom Wine Cellars San Francisco, were contacted by a client in Sausalito, California. The client needed trusted contractors to build him a dependable wine cellar that had a distinctive design. Our team went to the site and assessed the construction area. The space where the cellar was to be built was located under the stairways. The small enclosure had an L-shaped configuration.

We also had a consultation meeting with the client to determine his storage requirements, as well as his aesthetic goals. After gathering all of the needed information, our design specialists created a set of 3-dimensional drawings of the proposed design. We submitted a number of revisions. When the client finally approved the blueprints he was presented with, our contractors commenced with the construction.

Unique Home Wine Cellar Design and Specifications

Since the area underneath the client’s staircase was quite small, we had to create a design that would maximized the limited space. Using an assortment of racking styles, we were able to create a storage facility that could accommodate up to 404 wine bottles.

Racking Styles That Maximized Space in this Wine Cellar in Sausalito, California

Our team, together with the client, carefully chose the types of wine racks used in this project. We had to make sure that they were able to efficiently maximize the available space without compromising quality and aesthetics.

The racking systems we installed were made from Philippine Mahogany, which is one of the most durable wood species used for climate-controlled storage facilities. To accentuate the wood, we also applied a Chappo stain with lacquer finish.

We installed wooden horizontal display racks that were six inches deep. These types of racks displayed bottles in a label-forward orientation, which provided full visibility of the wine labels. The client can easily identify his favorite bottles at a single glance. Since this space was located under the stairs, the top section of this horizontal display racking had a step stair design. This customized design accommodated the descending height of the ceiling.

These X-bins were intended for large-format bottles and bulk-storage. Above the diamond bins were individual storage racks with 3 ¾” x 3 ¾” openings and could accommodate standard 750ml bottles.

A gorgeous high reveal display row was installed right across the single bottle racking system. Wine bottles rested at a 15-degree angle on the display row. This 15-degree tilt allows consistent wine and cork contact to prevent the corks from drying out and shrinking. This slanting configuration also allows the wine labels to be better seen. The client can flaunt the best of his wines on this high reveal display rows. An elegant LED lighting system was set up along the display row to create a dramatic illumination on the featured wines. High reveal displays are also a good way to organize a collection, because similar bottles can simply be stored above and below the display row.

Nestled deep at the back of the cellar was the end wall. More single bottle storage racks were installed on this wall. It also had open bins for additional bulk storage slots. The racking system on the end wall was shorter than the other racks in the cellar because the section above the racks was allocated for the cooling unit.

An Eye-Catching Wrought Iron Wine Cellar Door

The entryway of the cellar was designed to match the overall theme of the storage structure. A Seville-style custom-designed door was installed. It was a robust wooden door with an operable wrought iron gate over dual pane glass. The wrought iron gate had a latch that could be opened and closed so that the glass can be easily cleaned and maintained.

A Stellar Oak Wine Barrel Flooring

Wine barrels, after they’ve served their purpose, need not be thrown away. Reclaimed oak barrels can serve many other purposes, and one of them is for cellar flooring. Cellar owners can choose to use either the stave, infusion, cooperage, or a combination of those parts.

In the Sausalito, California project, the client wanted to use the cooperage. This refers to the top part of the barrels. Markings and stampings from the wineries that the barrels originally came from are distinct features of the cooperage. When used for cellar flooring, these markings and stampings add character to the entire wine room.

A Dependable Refrigeration Equipment from WhisperKool

To ensure that the temperature and humidity in the Sausalito, California home wine cellar are kept at the ideal wine storage levels, we installed an efficient cooling system. The equipment was a WhisperKool Platinum Mini Split Wine Cellar HVAC System, which was specifically designed for small and irregularly-shaped spaces.
